He was just as drenched in lakewater and mud as Wen He, but still he maintained an air of grace and elegance about him.
Wen He shot him a look and frowned in disgust. “Your cool act cost you a car accident, haven’t you learned?”
Gu Jinzhi was about to retort when Wen He noticed some movement from afar.
“They’re here.”
A few military vehicles were speeding toward them. Wen He quickly stood up but was struck by a sudden dizziness and pain in her ankle. She stumbled and nearly fell face-down on the ground.
Luckily, Gu Jinzhi caught caught her by the waist just in time.
She shook her head to shake away the dizziness and said, “Thanks.”
Then, she prepared to push the man away.

A sharp sound caught her by surprise.
The military vehicles had reached them. The first to step out of the cars was a tall and skinny man in military boots.
He looked slender and imperious under the glaring sun. His beret s.h.i.+elded his eyes from her, but Wen He recognized the man immediately.

She was so stunned that she forgot all about Gu Jinzhi’s intimate arm around her waist and simply stared at the familiar face.
Huo Chen looked up and quickly noticed her in Gu Jinzhi’s arms.
His expression stayed neutral, but behind him, Song Shou looked appalled.

Wen He finally came to herself and tried to push Gu Jinzhi away. She took a step back but lost her balance due her ankle and fell to the ground once more.
“Ma’am!”
Song Shou’s immediate reaction was to go to her and help her up.
“Song Shou.”
Huo Chen warned his subordinate with a flat voice. He was here to get a divorce, not celebrate a reunion.
His steady gaze ignored Wen He and scanned the site of the recent blast, which told him enough of what had happened earlier.
Then, he looked back toward the woman again, whom Gu Jinzhi had helped to get up to her feet.
“I have just arrived in the city today. The commander sent me here to take care of things and also to head to the administration office with you.”
Wen He’s face dimmed with an almost imperceptible expression of pain, but she merely lowered her head and did not reply.
“Officer Huo.”
Gu Jinzhi greeted with a mildly chilling smile.
“Wen He is injured, surely you are that much not in a rush to sever ties with her as to insist on doing it today?”
“I am very busy.”
Huo Chen replied plainly and looked Gu Jinzhi in the eyes, maintaining an air of absolute professionalism.
“I have new orders every day and cannot waste my time just because of an accident. Gu Jinzhi, if you meddle with my affairs again, I will not mind showing you the way out. Do not think that I will not find anything behind Lin Kang’s death.”
Gu Jinzhi glared dangerously. He was about to reply when Wen He spoke up.
“Alright, I’ll come with you now.”
Gu Jinzhi smiled gently and held her even closer to him. He said warmly, “Only you will care for me, dearest.”
“…”
Wen He glared at him, then looked to Huo Chen anxiously.
The man never changed his expression, seemingly untouched by her presence.
Wen He felt a jolt of pain deep inside her heart, but she kept her feelings firmly off her face.
She moved Gu Jinzhi’s hands away and started walking slowly.
The pain in her ankle from every step was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.
