The four bodies lay in a field of medicine on the hillside. The dead were all young, under 30 years old. One of the dead men, whose clothes were stripped away, was about the same size as the old man. It was not hard to speculate that the old man killed the four security guards and then took off one of the dead men's clothes and disguised himself as a security guard.
"The killer was supposed to look for that thing as well, and he didn't seem to antic.i.p.ate me and Lin Qingyu coming over. He probably also wanted to kill us as he came to us then, but as he learnt Lin Qingyu's ident.i.ty, he changed his mind. When I found what was hidden in the painting, he turned off the light switch and attacked us," Ning Tao told Jiang Hao of his a.n.a.lysis.
Jiang Hao frowned slightly and said, "Qiu Meng who kidnapped Su Ya and the old man who showed up here tonight aren't from the same force."
Ning Tao was filled with surprise and curiosity. "Do you mean there's another person that is targeting at what Lin Qinghua studied? Who?"
"I don't know," Jiang Hao replied, "I haven't received any information. I'll report what happened tonight to my superiors. The seriousness of the matter has exceeded my imagination. I want you to keep helping me until there's a clear order from the higher-ups. Will you go on helping me?"
Ning Tao nodded in agreement. The matter had come to the point where it was obviously impossible for him to get away from it. As he used his nose to find the two lump of bluish 'clay' and the thing hidden in one of them, Qiu Meng and the force behind him, would the old man that he met tonight and the force behind him pretended that nothing had happened?
The best way to deal with the enemy was to root him out.
Quietly, Ning Tao's nose and eyes entered the state of smelling and looking.
The four bodies had no colorful auras. Only living people had the innate aura which represented life. The dead were no different from the earth and the stones. They would no longer have anything that showed signs of life, like a movement or a sound.
Lost their innate auras, the symbol of life, they still emitted smells. Ning Tao soon picked up the old man's scent, which stretched from the field to the top of the hill. The discovery made him feel a sudden impulse—he wanted to follow the old man's scent and catch him!
"What are you thinking?" Jiang Hao was really observant.
"Nothing, just... a little scared," Ning Tao replied, suppressing the urge.
If he were here alone, he would certainly carry out the idea. But Jiang Hao was with him at the moment, and how could he explain to her that he could smell the old man like a dog and track him down? Plus, if Jiang Hao mentioned this in her report, he would be a guinea pig for the country.
Now, however, Ning Tao did not worry about where the old man might go, for he had been attacked by the Sacred Needle to Nasty Diseases. Ning Tao did not believe that the old man would not come back for him.
"Lin Qingyu had a dart in her chest. You repaired her wound, didn't you?" Jiang Hao posed another question.
That was a rather abrupt change of subject, and Ning Tao was discomfited. "No," he answered, "she repaired it herself."
"Really?" Jiang Hao asked, looking incredulous.
Ning Tao shrugged and said, "Why did I lie to you? But why do you ask?"
"Nothing. You can go back. There is nothing we can do here," Jiang Hao said.
"Then I'm going back." Then Ning Tao turned to leave.
Back to the lab, Wu Wenbo had finished taking the statement from Lin Qingyu. Later, the police wanted to send her to the hospital for further examination. She tried to refuse, but Ning Tao persuaded her to go. He could not see the wound repaired by herself, but he didn't think it was treated very well, and he couldn't help her redo it, so going to the hospital was a solution.
Ning Tao then drove back to the downtown area in a police car. After saying goodbye to Jiang Hao, he went back to the Sky Clinic alone.
The Sky Clinic was quiet. The black air and white air in the good-evil tripod were intertwined, interdependent and condensed.
The doors of the Cla.s.sics & Magic Arts Store and the Elixirs & Equipment Store on the walls on both sides of the tripod were closed. Ning Tao couldn't see anything inside or open it.
Nothing had changed here, and Ning Tao felt like home.
Then he opened his small medicine chest, took out the little bluish "clay" which he had secretly left, and laid it on the desk.
The piece he cut from the bluish "clay" that he found under Su Ya's bed was only about the size of his thumb. It looked like an unripe grape in color and shape under the seven-star lamp in the Sky Clinic.
Jiang Hao told him that she had sent the bluish "clay" to the academy for a.n.a.lysis of sciences, but in fact, even if she got the results, she probably wouldn't tell him because of the rule of confidentiality. This was one of the reasons he hid a little bit of "clay". The other reason was that it had something to do with the "new demon."
Then Ning Tao also brought out the ledger of bamboo slips of the Sky Clinic. "The ledger said Lin Qinghua was a new demon, and this stuff is related to Lin Qinghua. In other words, it is related to the new demon. I wonder if the ledger can unlock its secrets?" he wondered.
With this in mind, Ning Tao opened the ledger, which revealed the balance of the Sky Clinic's account. After a few seconds, the balance disappeared, and so did the black line.
Filled with curiosity, Ning Tao pondered for a moment and guessed the cause. "That black line is the sin that I committed when I needled Zou Yulin with evil intentions. Later, I saved Su Ya and got the merit of good intention. In short, I've done a bad thing and a good thing, and the merit offset the sin. Tonight I p.r.i.c.ked the old man with a Sacred Needle to Nasty Diseases, but I had no malice in my heart. I was defending myself when he tried to kill me. Thus I didn't create the sin of evil intention."
There was divine justice, and G.o.d observed what people did.
Figured out the logic, Ning Tao was relieved. "So I don't have to worry about the black line or the white line showing up in the ledger anymore. I'll just do what I have to do and run the clinic well."
Then he put the bluish "clay" on the ledger.
A few seconds later, a sentence popped up on the ledger, "The spiritual soil, a kind of soil that possesses spirituality, and the essential soil for cultivating spiritual plants."
The content surprised Ning Tao. "Spiritual soil? Isn't this the soil for cultivating spiritual valley and material in those fairy novels? Ledger says it is the necessary soil for the cultivation of spiritual plants. It is clearly the spiritual soil described in those fairy novels. But in those novels, the spiritual soil is only available in fairyland, and even it is very precious. Then where did Lin Qinghua get the soil? It seems that I have to cure Lin Qinghua even if it's a losing proposition. He's the only one who can answer me, after all."
Then the content in the ledger disappeared.
This ledger could unlock the secrets of some specific things, like a "cultivation encyclopedia IPAD of bamboo slips", which was undoubtedly a great help to Ning Tao, a rookie of pract.i.tioner.
Ning Tao put the spiritual soil in a porcelain bottle in the clinic and then replaced the ledger in the medicine chest. After that, he came to the good-evil tripod, sat cross-legged in front of it and began to practice his spiritual power.
He practiced the ABC of elementary cultivation method over and over again...
In this practicing he forgot time as before. When he finished, it was almost four o'clock in the morning. Instead of feeling a little tired out of the cultivation that lasted the whole night, he felt full of energy. What pleased him more was that he could feel clearly that his spiritual power had become stronger. It was a little progress, but He could sense it, which was probably because he was too weak.
Then Ning Tao stretched and had an idea. "This is a special time. Should I visit Suns.h.i.+ne Orphanage?"
He left a blood lock in Su Ya's room. In addition to convenience, the other purpose was to protect Su Ya and the children there.
Ning Tao looked at the wall and soon found a blood lock pattern, which was exactly the same as the blood lock pattern he painted in Su Ya's room. Then he grabbed the clinic key hanging around his neck and inserted it into the blood lock and gave it a gentle twist.
The blood lock suddenly diffused, and the wall of rock disappeared like a burned paper, revealing a hole as black as ink.
Ning Tao no longer had the initial tension and strode through the convenient door. He still felt as if he had been traveling through a time tunnel, and after a second or two of darkness, he saw familiar things—a simple cloth wardrobe, a rough wooden bed, and a small table. This was Su Ya's room.
Su Ya was lying in bed sleeping.
Ning Tao came out from behind the wall, stepped over the bedside table, and just stood beside Su Ya's bed. His eyes inevitably fell on Su Ya, and instantly he got awkward.
There was no air conditioner in this room, not even an electric fan. Shan City was a famous hot city. It was boiling even at night, so Su Ya did not cover the quilt. She was wearing only a pair of briefs, a bra that covered important parts of her body and they were made of very little cloth...
Ning Tao looked away in embarra.s.sment and tiptoed to the window. He wanted to see the front yard of the orphanage.
At this moment, Su Ya suddenly blurted out, "Help, help... I don't want to die..."
Ning Tao stopped and looked back at Su Ya.
Su Ya went on, "Ning Tao, why are you so nice to me? Why... You are a fool..."
Ning Tao was both angry and amused. "You scold me even in dreams. I want to spank you!" he thought.
As the idea flashed through his mind, he froze for a moment. Why did he have such a nasty idea? The answer was right in front of his eyes. It was as if he had been drawn to it by a magnet, a peach-shaped magnet wrapped in a scanty cloth.
Suddenly there was a sound of something heavy falling outside the window.
Ning Tao immediately took his eyes off Su Ya to look out of the window.
Outside the window was the back wall of the Suns.h.i.+ne Orphanage. It stood in the dark and could not be seen clearly.
Click!
Suddenly in the dark corner came the sound of broken tiles.
Ning Tao immediately realized what was going on. He quickly ducked to the wall next to the window.
Su Ya on the bed suddenly opened her eyes, and her eyes fell on where Ning Tao was. She didn't see anyone outside the window, but saw Ning Tao's figure hiding beside the wall. For a moment she wanted to shout, but she changed her mind for some reasons. She climbed out of bed lightly, pulled out a kitchen knife from under her pillow, and tiptoed toward Ning Tao.
Ning Tao didn't seem to notice what was happening behind him, still staring out the window in silence.
Su Ya approached Ning Tao step by step and quietly lifted the kitchen knife in her hand...
