"Think of our immense pleasure when you and your parents moved here for good. You visited us often sometimes staying with us for weeks and months at a time. And we were pleased with how good you and Su Jin Wei eventually got along."
Modesty was confused.
"What do you mean eventually?"
Su Jin Wei answered.
"You didn't like me at first. You said I was an egotistical, spoiled little brat with a stick stuck up his b.u.t.t."
Modesty guffawed with laughter.
"Well you are egotistical, but the other things aren't true anymore."
Su Jin Wei smiled down at Modesty, his expression softening. Mother and father Su exchanged a look, they were going to have a wedding and grandkids soon. Mother Su looked at her husband.
"You owe me fifty yuan."
Father Su just shook his head, he should have known never to gamble with his wife.
"So, you and Su Jin Wei actually became the best of friends, you two were inseparable. You all went everywhere together, he would even go to your school to bring you back home. Then your Uncle called saying that you guys were needed back in the states. Your father was going to be the only one going back because you begged to stay here with us. But, for some reason, they changed their minds and decided to take you with them."
Modesty rubbed her head, a memory started playing in her mind.
"Why do I have to go? Why can't I stay here with the Su Jin Wei and grandpa Su?"
Tears were streaming down Modesty's face.
"Your mother is coming to sweetheart. Your uncle says there is big trouble over at the main headquarters and we all need to go check it out."
Modesty shook her head, she didn't understand where this memory was coming from.
"Are you okay?"
Su Jin Wei looked concerned, but Modesty smiled a strained smile then nodded her head. Father Su continued talking but his voice was blurred out when the memory popped up in Modesty's mind again.
