Hallie too didn't pester him or even ask for much, this situation made him feel that having two wives wasn't as bad as people speculated. After all, men of old had a number of wives and concubines. Now he knew how pleased they felt. What he failed to realize was that the peace was only as a result of Judith being unaware of Hallie's existence and she was also trying to protect her right. Ultron from the movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron said, "Do not mistake peace for quiet." That was exactly what Brandon was doing and it was only quiet because the wife was unaware of the mistress. If and when Hallie births a child, if it's a son, her position as madam would be lost to Hallie. Will there be peace then?
Though she said she would invest, how could she remember when her husband was treating her well. His att.i.tude meant her position was secured so she needed not try to start up anything, she was in charge of the finances at home as well. She was too relaxed, forgetting that once, she was the mistress while her husband treated his wife well. Beverly was the envy of the capital then but no one was aware of her existence. Even after her pa.s.sing, they did not think of why he quickly got married, everyone a.s.sumed that it was for the sake of the little boy who had no mother.
Yes, he kept her perfectly hidden, he got her a house next to theirs, so he could easily go over even at night. How could Beverly even suspect that her husband spent most nights next door? She was a deep sleeper and he always made sure to return. She wasn't even aware of the secret door that led to the next house where the mistress resided. There was never a public confrontation like most dramas that the mistress try to show up in front of the wife. They never met in public too, he pampered his wife, he did as she wanted. Then again, who can possibly comprehend the mind of a man. How could she suspect? But it was also this sneaking out at night that Carl caught his father cheating.
A wise man once said, "don't a.s.sume you know your anybody, you can never know man, except what he shows you." This perfectly describe people, you can never tell what's in their heart. They could be laughing with you, eating with you but inside their hearts, they keep cursing you, wis.h.i.+ng for your death. It is said that only inattentive people get betrayed. If you really pay attention to your surroundings, there are certain things that would betray a man's intention for you. But how can you live so guardedly? You'd always suspect your partner. You'd always a.s.sume things would go wrong sooner or later. No peace of mind, who would want to live like that? Most people want a carefree life.
It had become a routine for Hallie to go over once a week and it had also become a routine for Brandon to go back to the ancestral house. Judith didn't think much, her husband of course was allowed to go visit his parents. They live alone, they could get bored easily. He offered them companions.h.i.+p, so she remained relaxed, not suspecting a thing. Forgetting even though his parents were aware of her existence, they never told Beverly or confronted Brandon, not even her.
She was so relaxed that the matter with her son, Ryan, escaped her mind, she continued with the things she knew how to do best; socialize, brag about how good her husband was and how expensive her jewelries and clothes were, gossiping about different families in the capital. Forgetting her responsibilities as a mother. She could probably justify her act, after all, she helped strengthen the relations.h.i.+p between her husband and the family of his business partners. But all these were not as important as your child. How could she realize that when more than anything, she wanted money and fame.
While she was toasting, making fun of other women whose husband's were cheating, her husband was buried deep inside another woman. Although he said he wouldn't touch her again, how could he remember his promises faced with a fresh face? A fresh fruit he had tasted whilst drunk with aphrodisiac, now that he was sober, he was tempted to have a feel again. Even though she practically did nothing to rouse him, he couldn't resist her, she made him feel young again. He wanted to be the one to take away her innocence, she was too pure and it was an honour to taint her. How could a painter resist a blank canvas?
