Inside the cart, Wu Jitian took out a dark blue handkerchief and handed it to Dong Ling. On it was an exquisite design of floating clouds.
“Take it and wipe off your sweat.” said Wu Jitian. Sweat was all over Dong Ling’s forehead. Wu Jitian almost wanted to wipe it for her.
Dong Ling went blank. Mm, she didn’t have an excuse to decline. She took it respectfully and said thank you. After she wiped off her sweat, she put the handkerchief into her pocket as she was used to.
Ah-oh… It was then she felt something wrong! Not her handkerchief! What was worse, Wu Jitian was staring at her with a meaningful smile. Ahem, she was at a loss what to do.
It must be too late to give the handkerchief. Besides, it was wet with sweat. Mm. She didn’t think she should just throw it, either. The conversation came to a deadlock. Awkward…
She had a brainwave and just looked away directly. She lifted the curtains calmly and pretended to enjoy the scenery along the road.
Seeing this, Wu Jitian no longer teased her. Instead, he went on to read a book with undivided attention. Dong Ling cast a glance over the book. It was Stratagems of the Warring States.
Dong Ling sat there, staring blankly.
“How is everything going in the capital?”
“Is everything still the same as it used to be?” She couldn’t help wondering a lot.
“Are you worried about your family?” asked Wu Jitian. Such a probing broke the silent.
“No!” answered Dong Ling quickly. Looked like she didn’t want to talk. But in Wu Jitian’s eyes, she was worried about her family stuff, but just didn’t want to admit it.
“You know, you don’t need to worry. Just rely on me and do whatever you want to!” said Wu Jitian who tried to calm Dong Ling down.
In fact, he had arranged everything ready for her family, hoping to keep her out of worry.
“I’m going back to the capital to take revenge. I’ll accept it whether I’m going to win or lose. As for my mom, if I die, please help to take care of her.” said Dong Ling in a fearless att.i.tude.
Wu Jitian was shocked!
Never had he expected to see such an ambitious girl who didn’t fear death at all! He really admired her!
Mm. He even made a silent vow to himself to keep her safe after arriving in the capital.
Soon, the sun set. The huge gate of the capital was right in front. It stood there silently with the moss all over, telling old tales of the city.
“Let’s go!” said Wu Jitian when he got off the cart peacefully and came to the gate where some soldiers were making an inspection tour. Many guys, who tried to get into the capital, were standing in a line with the pa.s.s in their hands.
“Wow, look! Isn’t he Prince Jitian? Why is he back to the capital instead of staying on the border? Hmm… Let me guess. Is it because you lost a battle and ran away? Haw-haw.” said a man who laughed greatly. Such a disdainful voice showed what an arrogant man he was!
Wu Jitian looked at him. It was a thin and ugly man.
Wu Jitian totally despised such a cipher who just tried to show off. Instead, he checked if he was properly dressed and ignored that man.
“Oh, he’s Prince Wu Jitian who was defeated by the enemy?”
“Looks like he is!”
People around kept gossiping sarcastically.
“What a loser! He lost two cities and so many people lost their homes. I’m a refugee from the border. My wife was…”
Suddenly, someone complained tearfully in the crowd and looked miserable, which caused public outrage.
Then, some eggs were thrown at Wu Jitian’s cart from nowhere. “Well done!” People laughed and cheered.
Some battles you would win and some battles you would lose. It was normal to lose a battle. But surprisingly, people were blaming Wu Jitian alone for the loss. How stupid!
Noticing the sticky egg wash on the window frame, Dong Ling looked at Wu Jitian who was sitting back into the cart. He, to Dong Ling’s surprise, still remained calm. He ordered, “Ignore them and let’s get into the city.”
“Yes.” replied Lin Zang who just dodged a speeding stone thrown at him.
The cart set out again. The killing intent on Lin Zang’s face terrorized people around while the latter no longer threw rubbish at them.
After all, such were imperial bodyguards with weapons. People knew they should stop. They made way for them, but still chattered away.
For the fear of more trouble which might aggrieve his master again, Lin Zang drove the cart himself! The cart rocketed by and soon arrived at Prince Jitian’s mansion.
This was where Wu Jitian had lived, before he was a.s.signed to his fief. So, it remained the same name as Prince Jitian’s Mansion.
Wu Jitian got off the cart and sighed when he looked up at the mansion. It was still the old place. But he was totally a different guy. That was exactly how he felt.
“Let’s get in!” said Wu Jitian. He wasn’t always a sentimental guy. Immediately, he was the fierce prince again as if he hadn’t ever sighed at all.
Right at this time, his mansion was densely besieged by imperial guards who patrolled around. Obviously, the mansion was heavily guarded.
“Your Highness, please stay!” said one of the imperial guards who stopped Wu Jitian.
“How dare you stop Prince Jitian?” yelled Lin Zang who quickly took out his sword.
“Lord Lin, please pardon us.” the head of the imperial guards said with a foxy smile and glanced at Lin Zang’s sword, “You Highness, no offense, but I’m just doing my duty! You’d better go tell His Majesty if you have an objection.”
“How dare you slander His Highness! You must be seeking your doom!” roared Lin Zang who tried to fight up.
Wu Jitian stopped him.
“How arrogant you are! You’re in the capital! Do you dare to disobey His Majesty?”
“What a f.u.c.king prince!”
People gossiped again. They almost all defended the imperial guards and mocked Wu Jitian.
Well, Prince Jitian’s Mansion was on the business street of the capital city where there was a noisy flow of traffic.
When Lin Zang argued with the imperial guards, people of the street all came and looked on.
Occasionally, they throw some vegetables or eggs at Wu Jitian.
Staring at Wu Jitian who stood by her side, Dong Ling felt somehow sorry. He was a n.o.ble prince. But look what he was suffering! His people despised him so much and he couldn’t fight back at feeble people.
Feelings here had been running high again! A strong man, seemingly vicious, rushed at Wu Jitian with a big bucket of porcine blood! He yelled, “Wu Jitian! My brother died just because you failed to lead your troops! You’ve got to pay for that!”
“Be careful, My Lord!” yelled Lin Zang when he immediately strode in front of Wu Jitian!
Surprisingly, they weren’t drenched in the porcine blood as they were supposed to! Instead, the head of the imperial guards, who was aggressive with something of a swagger, was sodden with the blood! He was completely bathed in the blood!
“Eww! gross!” yelled someone!
The sudden accident threw the imperial guards into confusion. As no one of them wanted to give up such a good chance to show off, they rushed up to wipe the dirty blood off their head.
Soon, they all got some blood on themselves!
“Haw-haw! Funny! Funny! You deserve it! Imperial guards? Dirty jerks!” laughed Lin Zang while he saw the dirty faces of the imperial guards. He clapped and yelled, “Bravo!”
“Let’s go! Get on the horse!” yelled Dong Ling.
Wu Jitian didn’t realize what had happened until Dong Ling asked him to get on the horse! Oh, she must have knocked away the porcine blood with a hidden weapon!
Dong Ling got on a tall and big horse, holding the broadsword she always used, just like a majestic-looking female general!
Then, she reached out and pulled Wu Jitian on the horse quickly before they galloped at the Imperial Palace.
