Ingrid could no longer hold back and confessed. She would rather choose to fail in this business proposal than to get it with a lie. She heaves a sigh before she spoke.
"I want to be honest, Clifford and I–err– Mr. Briggs and I are not a couple..."
Her face reddened after she confessed but the heaviness in her heart was lifted up and she could now breathe normally.
They all fell silent, she looked down out of embarra.s.sment and waited their angry words be hurled against her for the little deceit they devised. It took longer than she expected for them to speak up. So bravely looked at them only to find them staring at her.
Instead of angry stares, they were both looking amused.
"We knew, we were just testing you, dear... you represent your company all too well and Clifford is as best as ever. It's pity that you are not still together. I mean look at you both and the child, you are a family already. Only a wedding and a ring is missing." The woman teased.
She was bewildered at their statement.
"You are not angry? This is just a sweat tease and twist, Mrs. Jeffries." They both looked each other and chuckled.
"Nope, we are not. We also did the same, mind you." Mrs. Jeffries winked. "...Just a little story before we tell you our decision I'd like to share to you what we have seen earlier. When we were on our way to have our breakfast, we already have seen you in the lobby when you arrived this morning, with Clark in your arms sleeping peacefully. We were heading towards to help you but we stopped the moment we saw Clifford came running to your rescue. We could just stare how lovely you look together and how affectionate he is towards you. I thought he was your husband but then when we took a closer look, it was Clifford and we were puzzled all the more when we only knew that he was still single." Mrs. Jeffries recalled what happened earlier when they saw them. Her eyes glisten as she spoke.
"So we devised a plan to test both of you. Despite the fact that we have already decided that morning we still want to check your sincerity. We already have a background check on the product for some time already and it exceeded our preference. After the product we also had to check the people we will work with, especially the one who will represent the company.
Also, we could never work with people who were dishonest from the very beginning so we planned some testing." Mr. Jeffries added.
"Fortunately you and Clifford never disappoint us. I'd say the rumor is true or will be in the near future. Hope you won't this statement, I think you are indeed fit to be his wife I must say." Mr. Jeffries further commented
Ingrid blushed in bright red and her mind was fuzzy and could not understand what 'rumor' they were talking about, she could no longer speak, it's as if her tongue was tied.
"So, can we now sign the contract, dear?" Ingrid gasp and her mind became put out of order for a moment.
"Oh!" she snapped back to her senses. She heard the couple laughed. "I'm so sorry." She then handed the doc.u.ments and the two Crew 60th white gold Tebaldi fountain pens they will be using to sign the doc.u.ments which will serve as complimentary gifts to the couple.
"This is my favorite pen! You really did your homework." Mr. Jeffries exclaimed and winked at her.
Ingrid smiled with satisfaction. She could not wait to share to Clifford the good news. She squealed like a child inwardly, she tried so hard not to appear her raging emotions inside her.
'Wait, wait, wait... oh no. not this again... I must be crazy!'
