According to Su Ling's report, the situation back in the remote countryside where they came from was pretty bad. The residents needed to find a better place to settle down as the long drought and famine were badly impacting not only their livelihood, but also the health of their children and elders.
The Meng siblings would have to leave eventually as the boy was already malnourished and suffering from sepsis when Su Ling found them. This was why the Meng siblings felt extreme grat.i.tude for the Li family's help and were willing to do anything for them.
Yu Lou came back with a tray with freshly brewed tea and some cups. She poured her Miss Chuntao a cup and gave it to her. Li Chuntao thanked her and went back to her seat, listening intently to their conversation.
"Miss Li, what do you plan to do now?" Meng Lan asked her worriedly. She dearly hoped Miss Li would divorce her husband. A man who could hurt this beautiful angel's trust didn't deserve Miss Li at all.
"What else but file for divorce. I don't think I can pretend that I'm not aware of their lies any longer." Li Chuntao lowered her head, as if she was at a loss. "But I would need enough evidence to prove that he's cheating on me. I'm afraid he'll try to get as much money as he could from my family,"
It was Meng Lan who was affected by her words more than her brother. Li Chuntao could guess that Gu Changge's relations.h.i.+p with her wasn't good at all. Ah, it must be Meng Lan who refused to accept gu Changge as her sister-in-law, and her animosity against Gu Changge had remained to this day.
"Now that I know what my wife is up to, is it possible for me to divorce her too?" Meng Huan asked Li Chuntao but his sister couldn't stop reacting over it.
"And then what? Let them marry each other after Miss Li divorces her husband? No way!" Meng Lan exclaimed. She was furious that Gu Changge not only put a green hat to her kind brother but also wronged Li Xiuying.
"If I were you, I'll let Miss Li divorce her husband. As for your wife, let her suffer in h.e.l.l! Don't give her her freedom! Let her remain the other woman for the rest of her life!" His sister said out of rage.
"I think I haven't delivered the bad news yet…" Li Chuntao closed her eyes, trying to hide the glimmer of mischief in it. "Meng Huan, I'm afraid to say that your wife is carrying my husband's child. She... "
BAM!
Meng Lan threw her teacup as hard as she could. She's furious that she couldn't stop her eyes from bleeding red when she heard what Li Chuntao said.
"Gu Changge, you b.i.t.c.h! You shameless b.i.t.c.h!"
Meng Huan stood up and held his sister's shoulders, murmuring her to calm down but he also couldn't help but be embarra.s.sed in front of Li Chuntao and Yu Lou.
"I-I'm sorry, Miss Li," he stuttered as he helped his sister to sit down. Meng Lan's hands were shaking as she tried to take deep breaths to calm herself down. Meng Huan couldn't believe that his wife would betray him to this extent.
What could have happened to Gu Changge after she left them? Did she encounter hards.h.i.+ps along the way and was forced to do this to survive? After all, Gu Changge never finished her education because of family financial struggles. It would be hard for her to find a decent job too with her skills.
"No, I should be the one to apologize. If I didn't stall to confront my husband, none of this would have happened. It's my fault. It's my indecisiveness that brought us here," Li Chuntao told him.
Meng Lan was still shaking when she lifted her gaze to look at Li Chuntao who was on the verge of tears. So many complex emotions washed through her but one thing for sure, her brother and Miss Li didn't deserve any of this.
h.e.l.l, when she first met Gu Changge, she was sure that the woman was up to no good. The Gu family had sucked their wealth dry and when Gu Changge gave birth to Ling Ling, the poor boy was only months old when she had left their village.
For so many months, she watched her brother look around for his missing wife. Whether the sun was up or the sky was pouring heavy rain, Meng Huan tried his best to find Gu Changge in neighboring villages and provinces just to look for her while Ling Ling was left to her care, not knowing his mother abandoned him.
It was only when a year had pa.s.sed did Meng Huan stopped looking for her.. At that point, he had almost about forgotten their baby who was waiting for them to come home. For the first time since Gu Changge left, Meng Lan saw her brother shed tears for him and Ling Ling.
Gu Changge didn't deserve to be a mother. She didn't even deserve to be called a human at all. Even animals knew how to look out for their offspring but Gu Changge had run away as soon as she saw the opportunity to get a better life in the city.
Meng Lan had never met a woman as shameless as Gu Changge.
"Neither of you is at fault here,"
Why do innocent people have to suffer from the mistakes of their spouses? It was clear here that neither Miss Li nor her brother wanted this to happen at all. It was that cheating couple who started this mess, but why do these two need to suffer?
This was the reason Meng Lan thought having a husband was troublesome. This had shattered her belief in love and marriage. If most marriages ended up like this, then why the need to marry at all?
No, Meng Lan refused to allow these two to shoulder the consequences of their partner's sin. Her brother would be good without Gu Changge in his life, but Miss Li needed to be brave to leave her husband without allowing him to get a single penny from her.
"Miss Li, if there's anything we could do to help, please don't be shy to ask it from us. Your family has done enough kindness to my brother and Ling Ling and we know we could never repay you in terms of money…"
Yes, the inheritance both she and Meng Huan got from their parents was gone. The life they had in the countryside for the past years had been hard, especially when their parents died from a sudden illness which left them in debt. For the same reason, they couldn't even afford to bring Ling Ling to a specialist to check on his condition.
Listening to Meng Lan's words, Li Chuntao could almost taste the victory in her hands. Meng Lan would willingly play as her protector from now on and she wouldn't mind destroying Gu Changge's reputation for her sake.
'Mu Jianyu, Gu Changge… I hope you're ready for another round of trouble in the coming days, because I am!'
