“Maybe we can have Uncle Feng help us dig?” Shu Yan asked the two children.
JingJing didn’t say anything but Tianbao happily handed the hoe over. “Sure. Sure. Dig deeper, Uncle Feng. We don’t want our flowers to die.”
“Alright.” Feng Zeyu rubbed his hands, take the hoe from Tianbao and made the holes deeper. “Ready. Drop them in now.”
Feng Zeyu had done farm work in the past and had experience in this area. He told them tips and tricks on growing as he planted the seedlings and also how to better water and weed. Shu Yan only handed them stuff now and then. She spent most of the time watching the interactions between Feng Zeyu and her children.
JingJing, who felt a little resentful toward him initially had gotten much closer to him. She would even ask him a question from time to time.
“Okay, the flowers are planted. Now let’s move onto green onions.” Feng Zeyu knew that Shu Yan had planned to grow green onions on that land.
“I haven’t even bought the seeds yet.” Shu Yan had looked around but wasn’t able to find any green onion seeds.
“Forget about buying. Just grab a few from my garden. Green onions are easy and fast to grow.”
Feng Zeyu brought a handful of green onions over from his side and, seeing that the two children were itching to do it, went home and brought over two small hoes for them to use.
Feng Zeyu was the main workforce. The two children were just there for the fun of it. He had planted a whole bunch when the two children had only planted a few.
Shu Yan brought over a bucket of water for the kids to use to water the plants.
JingJing had done some farm work with her mother in the mountains in the past and was quite good at it. It was definitely the first time for Tianbao.
“Aiya, you can’t just waster the green onions directly. You need to add the water to the side.” JingJing went over to show her brother how to water the green onions. Shu Yan stood to one side and smiled as she watched them.
“I have some tomato seedlings as well. Do you want me to bring a couple over?” asked Feng Zeyu.
“Tomatoes? Sure!”
Tomatoes are easy to grow as well and they produce an abundance of fruits. They can be eaten raw or used to make soup.
Feng Zeyu climbed over the wall again and brought over four tomato seedlings. Tianbao went over to plant with him as soon as he had come back over. He looked up to Feng Zeyu now. JingJing was a little bit more timid but she didn’t resent him anymore.
Feng Zeyu was quite surprised. He had prepared himself mentally that would be a long battle. Turned out he didn’t have to do that with either of the two children. He couldn't help but looked over at Shu Yan.
“Green bean soup is ready. Come and get some.” Aunty went to the backyard to fetch them and was taken aback a little when she saw Feng Zeyu. When did he come in? How come she didn’t know that?
“Aunty, this is Feng Zeyu. He lives next door. He will sort of be our neighbor in the future.” Shu Yan helped the kids washed their hands and said to Feng Zeyu. “You’ve helped us a lot today. Have some green bean soup with us.”
“Okay, thank you.” Having said that, Feng Zeyu went inside, grabbed himself bowl and chopsticks, scooped himself some green bean soup and had two large bowls of it
Aunty looked over at Shu Yan and, seeing that she didn’t object to it, scooped out two bowls for the two kids.
She had been widowed since a young age and was very sensitive when it came to something like this. There was obviously something going on between these two. As someone who had went through that herself, she knew how difficult it was being a single mother. It would be nice if Shu Yan could find another partner.
