The keepsake was all the proof he needed.
Regardless of how she handled the circ.u.mstances, it didn’t change the fact that she was that person’s descendant. The same blood was flowing in her veins.
In time, Miss Yao Ran’s character would surely be restored to its original glory.
The most important thing right now was that they escaped from this predicament. The Young Miss had already suffered enough. Uncle Tiancouldn’t let her get hurt any more than this.
He needed to get her to safety.
!!Uncle Tian turned to the girl standing just a few feet from him.
“Xu Xuan, are you really going to betray us? What do you think Old Madam Xu would do to you when she finds out?”
Yao Ran also looked atXu Xuanwith the same disappointed expression asUncle Tian.
“Xu Xuan, I treated you so well, and this is how you repay me? I’ve always seen you as my best friend, but you’re just another treacherous snake. I regret ever trusting you.”
Xu Xuan looked between the two before turning in the direction ofYao TangandQin Jing.
Her eyes were clouded with confusion.
The sensible part of her knew that it was Yao Ranand the others who had instigated the trouble.Yao Tangwas merely responding in kind, andXu Xuancouldn’t fault her for that.
But Grandma Xu’s words were so deeply ingrained in her that she instinctively wanted to be onYao Ran’s side.
She was torn between loyalty and reason. She didn’t know which one to choose.
Seeing that Xu Xuandidn’t make a move,Yao Ran’s disappointment morphed into hatred.
It was just as she had suspected—this Xu Xuanwas reliable all along. She was obviously ready to betrayYao Ranat the most critical moment.
Whatever devotion she had shown her before was merely an illusion.
Thinking of this, Yao Ran’s hands clenched into fists, and a sinister smile appeared on her lips.
“Grandma Xu,” she called out toward the stairs. “Come and take a look at your granddaughter. See what a traitor she has become.”
The old lady came walking down the stairs right on cue, and Yao Raninwardly sighed in relief.
It was fortunate that Grandma Xuwas also present.
Yao Ran had always known that this old woman would be good to her, and would even prioritize her overXu Xuan.
Once she found out that her granddaughter was siding with Yao Ran’s enemy, she definitely wouldn’t let it stand.
Xu Xuan stiffened at the words “Grandma Xu”. She gingerly turned to look behind her.
Sure enough, her grandmother was there. The old woman’s face was filled with confusion as she surveyed the surroundings.
“What’s going on, Xu Xuan?” she asked, then her concerned gaze quickly darted towardYao Ran.
When she saw the girl’s bleeding face and dirty clothes, and noted how her granddaughter didn’t seem to be doing anything to help, Grandma Xuflew into a rage.
“I told you to take good care of the Young Miss! Is this how you protect her?”
Xu Xuan trembled. She opened her mouth and said, “I’m so sorry, Grandma. I was wrong. Please don’t be angry.”
“All right, stop talking! You don’t have to explain anything.” Grandma Xuclosed her eyes, her expression blank yet cold at the same time. She said nothing for a while.
When Xu Xuansaw this, she heard a buzzing in her head. A s.h.i.+ver ran down her spine.
She stepped forward, wanting to explain herself again. “Grandma, please listen to me first.”
But Grandma Xuignored her. Instead, she walked towardYao Tang.
Nie Yun and her team braced themselves, though they didn’t know what the old woman was planning to do.
It was clear that she cared for Yao Ranmore than she did her own granddaughter. If she decided to do something againstYao Tangin retaliation, the situation might get even trickier.
The female bodyguards inched a little closer to Yao Tang, tightening the circle they had formed around her.
Grandma Xu didn’t appear fazed by this. If anything, she gaveYao Tangan apologetic smile. “Tangtang, are you here to administer another treatment for me? I’ve been troubling you a lot, haven’t I?”
Yao Tang raised an eyebrow. “I suppose.”
It was a casual enough remark, but Grandma Xuwas suddenly struck by an ominous feeling, as though she was bared in front of an enemy, weak and vulnerable.
For a good few seconds, she was terrified. But it soon gave way to familiarity. She realized that Yao Tangresembled that person very much, the person she had always looked up to since her youth.
Grandma Xu even thought that the person had somehow descended and appeared in front of her.
