Xia Ruonan and Fu Hongyu got married.
Yao Jinxi remarked that these two moved too fast.
Wu Yang added, “Actually, we hooked even faster than them.”
At least Xia Ruonan and Fu Hongyu took an extra year to finally confirm their relations.h.i.+p.
During the year of them leaving the hospital, Wu Yang’s health recovered well. But Yao Jinxi still didn’t dare to let him do too much work. He reminded him at all times to take care of himself, not to overwork, to have a light diet, to avoid drinking alcohol, to remember to take medicine, and to sleep on time.
Even Yao Jinxi himself felt that he was being a bit too overbearing. But when he thought about Wu Yang undergoing surgery not long ago, he truly experienced a great ordeal. Even a cough would pull at the long incision on his body, causing him to wince in pain and turn pallid.
However, Wu Yang never found his nagging annoying. On the contrary, he enjoyed being taken care of by him. He firmly believed that those who claimed that other people’s wives were too strict were just jealous—hmph.
The two of them were a perfect match, dedicated to making people blind out of jealousy.
When Xia Ruonan got married, they were definitely invited. Wu Yang drove while Yao Jinxi prepared red envelopes on the side, pondering, “How much money is appropriate to give them…”
“Isn’t the envelope with you? Put in as much as you want,” Wu Yang said nonchalantly, fiddling with the navigation system. “Where exactly is their church?”
Yao Jinxi, being distracted, glanced at the bright red invitation card and repeated an address located in the outskirts of town.
The area was truly remote. Wu Yang had been circling around for quite some time, growing a bit irritated. He sighed as if finding it troublesome and readjusted the navigation. But the system seemed perplexed. “They really know how to make trouble. They even chose a church this remote. If I remember correctly, Xia Ruonan and Fu Hongyu aren’t religious, right?”
Yao Jinxi also felt a headache while on the road. Without thinking, he could understand that the one with such girlish sentiments definitely wouldn’t be Fu Hongyu. It must be to fulfil the future wife’s wish that he was going along with all this fuss.
Countless relatives and friends were probably getting lost on the way to the church as well.
Probably considering such a situation, the wedding in the church was scheduled for the morning. Those who couldn’t find it or didn’t want to go could directly arrive at the designated hotel in the afternoon. However, Yao Jinxi and Xia Ruonan had an extraordinary relations.h.i.+p. So they naturally intended to witness the whole event from beginning to end.
Finally arriving at the small church on time, the church didn’t give off a grand feeling but appeared delicate. There was a garden outside. With it being spring, the flowers were in full bloom. Without much embellishment, it was already a beautiful scene.
Walking along the gra.s.sy path, Yao Jinxi sighed, “It’s impressive that they found this place.”
With his suit jacket draped over his elbow, Wu Yang remained noncommittal.
The number of people who arrived wasn’t too many. But it was not too few as well. When they greeted each other, there was a common expression on their faces: It looks like you also had a challenging journey…
Fu Hongyu and his family welcomed guests at the church entrance. But the bride was not yet in sight. Yao Jinxi had contacted Xia Ruonan before and knew that her divorced parents were coming to send her off.
“You’ve arrived.” Fu Hongyu spotted the two and greeted the people around him before walking straight toward them. A wife’s close friend had to be prioritised, “Ruonan is still getting ready in the back. She’ll be very happy to know that you’re here.”
“Congratulations.” Yao Jinxi said, extending his hand. Wu Yang instinctively handed over a plump red envelope, “Wis.h.i.+ng you a hundred years of happiness.”
“Thank you.” Fu Hongyu accepted it and exchanged a few words with Wu Yang. He then smiled at Yao Jinxi, “Would you like to go and see Ruonan in the back? She’s probably very nervous.”
Understanding that the groom was genuinely concerned about his bride, Yao Jinxi smiled knowingly, “Sure, I’ll go take a look.”
In the bride’s preparation room, Xia Ruonan sat in front of the mirror while a makeup artist worked on her face. When she saw Yao Jinxi enter through the open door, she turned her head abruptly, “Jinxi!”
The others in the room, to varying degrees, had seen Yao Jinxi before and nodded in acknowledgment. Yao Jinxi also noticed Xia Ruonan’s mother, Lu Ting, “Auntie, it’s been a while.”
Lu Ting looked a bit puzzled, not recognizing Yao Jinxi, “It’s been a while… But who are you again?”
“When I was little, I lived next door to you,” Yao Jinxi replied with just this sentence and didn’t offer any further explanation. He walked behind Xia Ruonan, hands resting on the chair arms as he bent down, “Wow, you look beautiful.”
Xia Ruonan was already naturally beautiful so the makeup artist didn’t need to do much. The subtle bridal makeup highlighted her innocence, with a floral hairpin pinned at the back of her head. It accentuated her pure and serene temperament. The perfectly shaped lips were adorned with a full red colour, brightening her entire flower-like face.
The happiest moment of her life was about to unfold. Her eyebrows, like distant mountains, held a hint of charm. Her eyes were softly expressive, making her resemble an unparalleled beauty.
With an extremely gentle smile on his face, Yao Jinxi looked at Xia Ruonan in the mirror, “They say that a girl is most beautiful on her wedding day. And today, I truly believe this saying.”
Seeing Xia Ruonan’s eyes gradually welling up, Yao Jinxi quickly changed the topic, “Who would have thought that the little naive girl who stood in front of my house sniffling all those years ago is getting married now? Well, it looks like Fu Hongyu will have a tough time in the future.”
Xia Ruonan’s momentary emotion and reflection faded as she pretended to be angry and punched Yao Jinxi, “Enough of that! Today is my wedding day so say something nice.”
“I just said something nice a moment ago. What else can I say? Your beauty is truly mesmerising,” Yao Jinxi straightened up and turned around. He leaned against the makeup table, crossed his arms, and looked down at Xia Ruonan, “Nervous?”
Hearing this, Xia Ruonan turned to look at herself in the mirror. Her hand, which hadn’t yet put on the lace gloves, touched her own cheek, “I don’t know if I’m more nervous or more excited.”
She sighed softly, “By the way, w.a.n.g Peng sent a gift through someone.”
“What’s he up to? Why bother? Does he want you to meet him before you get married? It’s probably because you didn’t hold onto him,” Yao Jinxi chuckled. Looking back, that time felt like a different world. Everything around him seemed to change after meeting Wu Yang. “The happy days are always ahead. Any thoughts about when to have children?”
Xia Ruonan smiled without answering. She then whimsically asked, “How about I have an extra one and let you and Wu Yang raise him?”
She didn’t feel anything wrong with what she said. But the friends and relatives around them were all shocked to hear that. Yao Jinxi playfully wanted to pat her head but suddenly remembered the complex hairstyle she had. So he placed his hand on Xia Ruonan’s shoulder instead, “Go ahead and have as many as you want. Even if you have a whole soccer team, Fu Hongyu can afford to raise them.”
Moreover, being in the legal system, they might get a discount on the surcharge for exceeding the child limit.
They were originally just joking. So Xia Ruonan smiled and let it pa.s.s.
Someone came in from outside to inform them, “The bride can get ready now.”
The stylist immediately became nervous and the makeup artist rushed over to check if there was any smudging. Xia Ruonan stood up and lowered her head. She covered her face with the veil, took a deep breath, and picked up the bouquet that was big, almost reaching her knees.
Yao Jinxi symbolically pulled the veil for her. The white veil only covered her eyes, “Today is your big day. Be happy. Don’t be nervous. If anything goes wrong, blame it on Fu Hongyu.”
Xia Ruonan looked at him and laughed, “Do you do the same for Wu Yang?”
“Oh, Wu Yang is more proactive. He takes the initiative to admit mistakes first,” Yao Jinxi winked at her, “I’ll go to the church first and wait for you.”
He left ahead. In the church, there weren’t many rows of chairs to begin with. At this point, most guests had taken their seats. The attendees were mostly younger, as older individuals might not be fond of the Western-style setup, not to mention the fatigue of such long travel.
Wu Yang occupied the last row on the left. He was alone and constantly looking towards the door. When he saw Yao Jinxi entering, he waved at him. He walked over and sat down after a few steps, “Has it started? Why isn’t there any music?”
“Who knows? Maybe there’s no sound system?” Wu Yang looked at Fu Hongyu standing next to the priest and suddenly felt a bit envious. He held Yao Jinxi’s hand, “What if we do something like this too?”
“Don’t be crazy. Do you know this is a Christian church? If you try to marry me here, the priest will tear you apart,” Yao Jinxi looked at his earnest expression and chuckled, “Besides, what difference does it make if we get married or not?”
Wu Yang turned to look at him. He then smiled knowingly, “That’s true.”
The two held hands and at that moment, the music that had accompanied the union of countless couples finally began to play. Xia Ruonan, veiled in her wedding gown, took each step towards Fu Hongyu, led by her father. The onlookers held their breath, feeling the scene before them radiating the sacred spirit of happiness.
Everyone could hear the heartfelt ‘I do’ from the newlyweds. The priest asked, “Since you have chosen married life, do you both vow to love and respect each other for the rest of your lives?”
Wu Yang tightened the grip on the hand he was holding and softly said, “I do.”
Though soft, the sound reached Yao Jinxi’s ears, warming his heart like the clasped hands do. For some reason, before his eyes, memories of their journey from when they first met until now flashed through his mind.
They carried emotional wounds, as if waiting specifically to meet each other. Pa.s.sing by all sorts of people, they eventually arrived in front of each other. They gained something, sacrificed something, and healed each other. It might sound ordinary. But like everyone else in the world, they went through the stages of acquaintance. They fell in love and were now together.
Yao Jinxi, standing beside Wu Yang, gazed forward and joined in with Xia Ruonan’s recitation, “I now solemnly acknowledge you as my husband.”
“And promise from this day forward, in times of prosperity or adversity, in sickness and in health, I will forever love, honour, and cherish you, till death do us part.”
“May the Lord be merciful to my intentions.”
When the priest mentioned the exchange of wedding rings, Wu Yang lightly kissed the base of Yao Jinxi’s ring finger. His warm lips sealed the vow. Then, the groom kissed the bride. As the applause and blessings filled the air, they shared a familiar kiss behind everyone else—a kiss that needed no introduction.
I will forever love, honour, and cherish you, till death do us part.
May the Lord be merciful to my intentions.
