Chapter 22
“Is it just because I am the daughter of a mayor? But you saw that I’m nothing in the Gu family, and you should know that I’ve absolutely nothing to offer. So… Zuo Hancheng, why did you marry me?”
He suddenly stroked her head. “Since you know that you do not bring any benefit whatsoever, then don’t be too defensive. I’m gonna go for a business trip to Los Angeles for two days, and I’ve got a plane to catch tomorrow morning. So sleep early.”
‘There can’t be no reason.’ Anhao was certain that men would never like her based on how she behaved or dressed up.
Plus, there would be absolutely no way for Zuo Hancheng to fall in love with her at first sight last time. She could still vividly remember how disgusted he looked after she threw up on him when she was drunk the first time he met her.
Anhao lifted her head to see Zuo Hancheng with his eyes shut. She was unsure whether he was sleeping or not.
She might have no idea who he was, but a man who seemed to be at the top of the world was surely not an easy man to deal with.
‘So, why in the world would he treat me well, give me a home, and even try to discipline such a bad girl like me to be successful in life?’
With her being unaware of how long she had been covertly gazing at him while in his arms, Zuo Hancheng suddenly opened his eyes in the dark.
The moment she saw his eyes, Anhao was startled and lowered her head into his arms, fearing that he would get angry again, she hastily said, “Goodnight!”
Then, she accidentally hit Zuo Hancheng’s chest. Looking at her curling up like an ostrich as she feared what he would do to her next, he s.h.i.+fted her out of his arms. “You seem to have lots of energy left. We can do something else if you don’t wanna sleep.”
Anhao instantly retorted, “No, no, no! I’ll sleep!”
She quickly gathered up the blanket and lay down beside him stiffly, not daring to lean toward his arms again.
Zuo Hancheng did not reach in to pull her into his arms again. Seeing that she had put both her arms on both sides of her body, and had her eyes shut in a defensive manner, he could not stop laughing at her childishness.
Even though Anhao knew that he was just joking with her, her eyes were clamped shut and she did not dare to stare at him again.
At first, she did not want to hit the sack for the night. Nevertheless, she unwittingly fell fast asleep not long afterward.
It was a night of rest with a rare peace of mind.
***
A good night’s sleep.
The alarm on her phone awakened Anhao. Opening her blurry eyes, she hugged the blanket and lazily rolled into a ball on the bed, unwilling to get up.
After rolling about on the bed twice, she suddenly froze and instantly woke up. Then, she sat up to look at the spot next to her, only to find that Zuo Hancheng was gone.
She combed her fingers through her hair and then shut off her phone’s alarm. After getting out of bed, she opened the door and went out. Zuo Hancheng was not in the living room either.
It was now past 6am in the morning. It turned out that what he said last night about him having a business trip to Los Angeles for two days was indeed true, and so was the early morning flight.
The sense of freedom gave her a breath of fresh air. Anhao excitedly turned around and was about to sleep for two more hours in the bedroom before starting to arrange her various schedules today.
Upon returning to the bedroom, before she could even lie down on the bed, a message notification sound came from her phone. Picking up her phone, she saw that the message was from Zuo Hancheng.
“It’s Monday today, don’t skip school.”
‘Ah f*ck!’
‘You’re almost on the way to Los Angeles, and you still worry about whether I’ll skip school or not!’
Irritated, Anhao threw her phone on the bed. She intended to ignore him at first. Besides, there was absolutely no way he could control her since he was on the other side of the earth for two days.
But in the end, like she was being probed by some unseen ent.i.ty, or perhaps it was out of guilt, Gu Anhao reluctantly went to school.
Since she had no plans to really listen to Zuo Hancheng at all, then why would she comply with his arrangements?
In addition, he was not with her right now, so he could not control her. However, those night owl friends of hers were still sleeping in this brisk morning, and there was no one to accompany her. As such, she had no choice but to go to school and flirt with some handsome boys to pa.s.s the time.
Anhao’s school uniform was thrown into the bedroom. All the clothes here were those that Zuo Hancheng bought for her at the shopping mall, clothes she was not accustomed to.
‘It’s fine without anyone seeing what I wore the past two days.’ Now Anhao was walking on the road, wearing a beige dress. And wherever she went, she could sense various strange looks around her setting their sights on her.
‘I knew that this kind of feminine outfit is the ugliest! Zuo Hancheng and the salesperson’s taste is c.r.a.p! How dare they get me to wear clothes like this!’
As she walked into the entrance of A High School, both the uncle and the security guard in the guardhouse suddenly had the windows opened, as they blatantly stared at her.
She was used as a negative example by both her teacher and princ.i.p.al in front of the school from the very beginning, yet Gu Anhao never felt embarra.s.sed by that. But now, she could not take their strange looks anymore and simply trotted back to her dormitory.
With her habitual kicking in opening the dormitory door, she was about to retrieve her school uniform. The moment she entered, Chunchun spat out the mouthful of porridge she had in her mouth upon seeing her. “Pfff…”
Huang Amao was also staring at Anhao with a flabbergasted expression. “What the f*ck! Gu Anhao, have you become a trans?”
Anhao’s mouth twitched fiercely. Lucky for them, no one was willing to live with them due to Anhao’s ‘renowned achievements’ for the past few years. With only three of them living in a room of four, there was absolutely no one else to enjoy such an embarra.s.sing scene.
“Trans? Can’t you see I’m wearing a skirt?”
After entering the room, Anhao hurriedly rummaged through her stuff on her bed, looking for her school uniform. “I didn’t return during the weekend. So, did you two help me wash my school uniform? And where did you put it?”
“…” Chunchun coldly glanced at the feminine-looking Anhao searching here and there on the bed, apparently trying to confirm that this really was Gu Anhao. “My G.o.d! I thought that I was wrong. This white lotus who came out of nowhere dares step into our room?”
Hearing Chunchun’s description of her, Anhao turned around and headed over to sit beside the table. Seeing a lunch box on the table which they had prepared for her, she opened it and began to eat.
Both the porridge and steamed buns were still hot. While taking a bite of the steamed bun, she said, “Where’s my school uniform?”
“I didn’t see it.” Huang Amao pursed her lips. She then craned her neck and glanced at the dress on Anhao’s body.
“This looks like Senwaroer’s latest model this year. What happened? Is your dad being promoted as a governor or what? And how the h.e.l.l did you get rewarded with such high-quality clothes? Really puts your reputation as the Gu family’s little beggar to shame!”
As for Chunchun, she scanned through her carefully. “Why did you suddenly vanish before you finished taking shots last Friday night?”
“Where else can I go? That owner of Enchanting Bar, Huang s.h.i.+ren, the Vampire, saw that I was not drunk yet. So, he let me deliver alcohol to our customers.” There was a bit of vagueness in Anhao’s reply.
