The entire family fell silent once again. The relief they'd just moments ago was all gone. Caroline Roy was sobbing uncontrollably. Richard Roy tried to comfort her, "Nothing will happen to our son. He has to come back to us. He will come back to us…"
The family huddled closer and prayed for Ronnie to wake up. Every second of their waiting seemed like ages.
Jayne then turned to both parents, "Dad, I think you all should leave. You need to rest too. I'll stay here. You don't have to worry."
Richard Roy spoke, "No child! It's okay! We'll all stay here.."
Jayne calmly said, "You have to go home, have dinner and take your medicines so that you guys don't fall ill at such a moment. Plus, I've Daniel here with me.. we'll wait… you please leave for the day. You can come back, first thing in the morning…"
"You should remember to eat child." Caroline Roy instructed.
"I will mom. Don't worry about me." Jayne obliged.
Reluctantly they left leaving Jayne waiting outside the ICU. Jayne kept pacing around. She could neither eat nor sleep..
Daniel West came to her, "Madam, you should be eating something. Here!" He handed her a takeaway.
"No Daniel.. I've no appet.i.te… You go ahead and eat something…" Jayne said dejected.
Daniel West didn't press further since he very well knew how it felt like. Even he was in deep pain and even he had no appet.i.te to eat...
Within a short span of interaction with Jayne, Dr Scott had realised how much she loves her husband. He decided to do her a small favour by letting her stay with Ronnie.
Jayne couldn't ask for anything anymore. She was asked to change into sterilised hospital clothes and footwear. She then sanitized her hands before entering inside.
Jayne made up her mind and walked inside. She could see Ronnie lying on the bed. A huge bandage was tied around his head. His body was connected with all sorts of pipes and wires to the machinery around him. His eyes were closed.
Every step she took felt heavy. She staggered her feet across the room to Ronnie's bed. How much ever strong she tried to be, it pained her soul to see the love of her life like this.
She was instructed not to touch him yet. So, she controlled her urges to go forward and feel him. She only lifted her hand and drew them back immediately. Tears started rolling down her cheeks uncontrollably.
She always thought that she could never feel lonely again with Ronnie around her. Probably this was the first ever time she felt so insecure. She badly wanted to hold him to rea.s.sure herself.
She was asked to sit on a chair. She kept gazing at Ronnie's child like solemn face. The tears in her eyes never stopped. She was silently praying with all her heart for Ronnie to wake up. She was slightly relieved for the fact that she was so near to him and she could actually see him.
The nurse on duty checked Ronnie's vitals. She recorded them and sat at her table. After sometime she dozed off..
Minutes pa.s.sed by… but Jayne was so attentively watching her husband without even blinking her eyes fearing where she'd miss something..
She began speaking to him inwardly, "Ron, please wake up.. You can't be doing this to me.. I'm scared as h.e.l.l to be seeing you like this Ron.. Please call me wifey just once… Ron, n.o.body, not even you told me that this searing grief and pain felt so much like fear. It's only now that I know what fear means.. It's such an alien feeling to me Ron. I want you with me… I'm unable to handle this alone…"
As much as she tried to hold it in, as strong a woman she was, the fear in her broke through all her strong walls.. the walls that were holding her up were giving away bit by bit.. slowly collapsing… and with n.o.body around and looking at Ronnie like this she felt even more vulnerable…
She didn't realise when hours flew by like this and it was already the next day morning. The Roys and the Bhats rushed to the hospital in the early hours of the morning. Jayne didn't realise the time until a nurse came and informed her that her in-laws were waiting outside.
Jayne glanced at the time. It was already 6AM. She got up and went outside the ICU.
Caroline Roy looked at her daughter-in-law. Her face was drawn and haggard with sleeplessness. Her swollen eyelids showed that she'd been weeping all night. "My child, you look too weak. Since we are here, you go back home, rest for a while and come back."
Jayne refused. "No mom... Ron will be waking up anytime. I don't want to miss it."
"Okay, at least eat something beta. I've brought you breakfast." Sona Bhat said.
"No mama. I won't eat anything until he wakes up. Please don't worry about me." Jayne tried to comfort them.
Jayne then excused herself and went back inside. The parents felt miserable to see both their children suffering like this.
Sona Bhat wanted to give her daughter an apple at least. She walked up to the door of the ICU and knocked. Jayne came out to check who it was.
Jayne failed to notice that exactly at that moment, Ronnie's fingers trembled, his brows drew together due to the sharp pain he felt in his head….
