Some monsters have the intelligence to use magic, however. This list includes things like dryads, dragons, goblinoids, etc. But generally, these monsters are only able to use low-level spells for the most part or uncommon and capable of using mid-level spells. The common human after killing monsters enough has enough skill points and mana to get a magic skill right away.
But the real edge humanity has is that their base intelligent stat is high enough that it meets the requirements for mid-level magic while the common monster appears to not have a high enough stat to unlock that level of magic. Just another reason religious organizations proclaiming humanity to be the chosen species.
-Excerpt from the monster encyclopedia by Xander sage

So magic. I'm starting to regret my choice of magic. I should have taken the healing one because I could have healed up the others even if a little bit. But no, I chose fireb.a.l.l.s! FIRE! b.a.l.l.s! I am a plant. I am still very flammable. And yet I chose fire magic as my first magic.
There has to be a limit to just how dumb of choices I can make. Sure, you could say that it was the human in me thinking because nearly everyone sees fire magic as a awesome magic to have! But yet despite living as a flower for an undeterminable amount of time and experiencing firsthand just the night before that fire was the bane of my life, I still chose it.
But the choice has been made. I'll just need to find a way to become fire resistant! But first I need to come up with a plan to avoid getting killed again by these adventurers. And hopefully, save a few of my new buddies in the process! Although now that I think about it trying to get a bunch of trees out of harm's way will be a bit difficult…
But I'll need to figure something out soon. Since there's only a small village nearby I'm hoping that the closest guild base is a day or two of away at the very least. Maybe a week if I'm lucky! Which means I have some time before any counterattack comes for my petals. I could be a productive member of the monster species and focus on level ups. Maybe try and wreck the nearby village. But that's not going to by my aim for right now.
Right now, I'll be testing out my new ill-chosen spell. But for that, I need targets to practice on. And what better than my longtime friend the fanged frogs? After getting a good idea of how to use the skill I can consider trying to kill one of those wolves I spotted awhile back. It'll surely be worth a decent number of points.
With this vague plan in mind, I set out to find me some frogs. Some slimy disgusting frogs. Like I expected it didn't take me very long to find a small group of four fanged frogs. With my stealth skill, I was able to get within a good 5 feet of them. The frogs were currently eating what looked like to be the carca.s.s of a squirrel or rabbit. Blissfully unaware of their impending doom… How sad it is. How sad… But good for me!

There's a strange thing that I've noticed about skills and mutations alike. Even though sometimes I add entirely new parts to my own body like the thorn vines I somehow instinctively know how to use them. As if something programmed how to use these various skills and body parts as soon as I get them. And that was no different with the fireball skill.
I could practically feel what felt like another mind racing through various thoughts as various dim glowing red lines manifested themselves in front of me and began twisting themselves into a circle with a diamond shape set in the center of it. All of this took place in less than a second before a ping pong sized fireball rocketed out of the diamond and crashed into one of the fanged frogs. This incited a pained yelp from the frog as its skin was scorched by the fire. After a short moment of squirming the frog went still.
[Fanged frog slain. 2 XP earned. 2 MP collected. 1 skill point and 1 mutation point added.]
The other frogs upon seeing their fellow die in such an agonizing manner promptly started to hop for their lives. However, it was far too late for them to hope for such an easy escape! My subconscious once again started cranking out another fireball spell as my vines darted towards the frogs. Two of the frogs were impaled in the chest and leg respectively while the third one had a fireball slam into its back.
[3 fanged frogs slain. Total of 6 XP, 6 MP, 3 skill points, 3 mutation points added.]
I must say it was easier than I thought it would be to use magic. From the way novels usually describe it magic always seemed like a difficult thing to use. But it did feel like another mind was doing all the heavy lifting… Maybe it's my subconscious? Whatever it is I have to say it's rather convenient. But the magic itself is rather disappointing. But what did I expect from something that could only deal 5 points of damage?
But this isn't the end of the testing yet! I shall continue my tests to see what my spells limits are!
(A few hours later…)

I spent a good 100 points on killing frogs and managed to kill 12 frogs. And my discoveries were sufficient enough to have a good grasp over the spell along with magic in general. For one I couldn't shoot more than one fireball at a time and there was no cool downtime for this level of the spell. But the biggest thing is that mana seems to have a regeneration rate of 0.4% of the total mana per second.
1 point of mana a second. Not a bad regeneration rate, but I would like to collect more mana to make the entire thing more efficient. Even with the mana from the frogs I've recently killed added I only have enough for 28 fireb.a.l.l.s. While I was at killing frogs, I tested out my numbing pollen on a couple of frogs. The results were rather encouraging with both subject's movement capabilities decreasing by a significant amount. If I were to make an uneducated guess it seemed their reaction times were easily 40% slower.
Not an impressive amount but now that I know a bit more I can go after my next prey. The wolves. Between the new absurd length of my vines and the range of my fireb.a.l.l.s, as well as my upgraded pollen I should be capable of taking on one of the wolves. And with the wolves being about as large as the ones on earth it means they're a lot larger than me. This provides me with the perfect chance to test out how much of an increase my brutalizing chainsaw teeth capabilities are.
Yes… Today is the day I become the wolf slayer!
